Langtry, Texas

Day 4, Saturday, April 18, 2015

So, my alarm went off at 6:30 AM, again.  Let me back up.  Jan and I were sleeping…in separate beds!...and the alarm went off at 3:30 AM.  It woke up startled because the alarm was music.  I first thought that it was Jan’s alarm.  I then realized that it was the alarm on the clock radio between the beds.  I stumbled with it, not knowing immediately how to work the damned thing.  I turned it off and went back to sleep.  Now, my alarm went off at 6:30.  Jan refused to get up.  I got up and got dressed.  Jan did wake up enough to tell me that it was still dark outside.  I still got a couple of my bags and took them to my Motorcycle. The sun was peeking out and it was a little cloudy.  It was cold, but not as cold as it was yesterday.  I took the cover off of my Motorcycle and pack away my two bags.  I returned to my room and Jan was already dressed.  We went down to the breakfast area and Chuck was already there!  Wow!  J.B. must have a miracle pill and gave it to Chuck.  Everyone started to trickle in for breakfast.  We finished and returned to our rooms to get the remainder of our bags and loaded up our Motorcycles.  We left the Hampton Inn at 8:59 AM.
Jake was in the lead.  This was his first time to lead the group.  He is our “newbie” you know.  Jake led us onto Business I-10 and then south on Highway 285.  It was a beautiful morning to ride on the two lane road.  We rode for 69 miles and at 10:02 AM we stopped in Sanderson, TX for a pit stop.  There was a little restaurant attached to the mini-mart gas station.  After the needed pit stop, (bonus!  It was a 4 holer bathroom), everyone sat at the tables to rest a little in the vacant restaurant.  I stayed with the Motorcycles.  I needed to make a couple of phone calls.  The guys returned to the Motorcycles and we got ready to go, still wearing jackets.  We left at 10:33 AM.
Jake continued to lead the group east on Highway 90.  We got to the little turn off to go to a little town called, “Langtry.”  This is the famous town from the past where Judge Roy Bean lived and ruled the territory.  This town was named for Lily Langtry, an English actress that Judge Roy Bean liked very much.  We had ridden for 63 miles and stopped at 11:27 AM.  We parked our Motorcycles and went into the FREE museum.  We like FREE!  We toured the grounds and took pictures.  Google Judge Roy Bean for more information.  We were there for a little while longer.  From the front of the Museum, we could see where the Rio Grande was.  The grounds and museum were not very big.  We all got back onto our Motorcycles and left at 12:12 PM.
We were all getting hungry so we headed east on Highway 90 and our destination was Del Rio, TX.  As we were riding east, we crossed over the Pecos River.  Wow!  It was big.  We were also riding close to the Texas/Mexico border and saw a lot of Border Patrol Agents working.  We rode for another 59 miles and stopped in Del Rio, TX at 1:01 PM.  We needed gas so Jake stopped at a gas station.  We all filled up.  We were still hungry.  For being the “newbie,” Jake did a good job leading.  He didn’t make any wrong turns nor did we have to make any u-turns.  Good Job Jake!  It was Jan’s turn to lead.  Jan took us to the nearest Subway.  We had a good lunch and were ready to go.  We left at 2:10 PM.
We didn’t have very far to go.  Jan lead us east on Highway 90 and 81 miles later, we arrived in Uvalde, TX at 3:27 PM.  We stopped at a Holiday Inn Express.  I went in and “made the deal.”  The price was OK and we all checked in.  We have new roomy assignments.  Chuck/Ken, Jan/J.B., Bruce/C.E. and Jake/Me.  We unloaded our Motorcycles and took our bags to our rooms.  We parked our Motorcycles, cleaned them and tucked them in for the night.
I started on my blog right away.  I found that I had forgotten to write the end miles so I had to go to my Motorcycle to get it.  Jake went to the fitness room with Bruce.  Ken walked next door to the liquor store and brought back some beer.  When I went downstairs to my Motorcycle, I saw the other five guys sitting in the breakfast area next to the TV drinking beer.  I was invited and joined them.  My understanding, at this point, is that we are going across the street at the Oasis BBQ for dinner.  It does sound good.
Today, we rode only 272 miles.  Tomorrow, we hope to go to the area southwest of San Antonio to go onto three roads called, “The Three Sisters.”  It is said to be roads NOT for beginners.  Chuck and Jan found information on these roads and it is supposed to be for the “more experienced” riders.  This should be interesting!  So, until tomorrow…
